As moms, it’s easy to have our lives revolve around our family and to lose ourselves in our day-to-day routine. I often feel as if MOM stands for Maker of Memories. We spend so much time making life fun and easy for the family that we push our own interests and hobbies to the backseat. Our kids don’t just need us to be any mom, they need us to be the best version of ourselves we can be. This means taking care of ourselves and making some memories that don’t involve them.
Yes! You deserve a girls’ night out, and I can give you three reasons why.
- You Need Rest
Taking that five-minute break hiding in the bathroom is not enough time to free your mind. Take the time to disconnect from your MOM duties. Just like it hurts your feet to wear worn out shoes, it’s harmful to your body to keep pushing after it’s reached that breaking point. Recharge your mommy battery and rest.
- You Need to Connect with Adulthood
If the last time few times you “dressed up” you had on a tiara, a princess dress, and a magic wand then you spend too much time with your little people. Reading your friends’ Facebook posts (while you’re hiding in the bathroom) does not count as connecting with your adult friends. Put the phone down, slip on a cute dress, and have a night out with your friends!
- You Need Some Fun
A cheerful heart is a healthy one. Laugh until you cry, pamper yourself, grab a cup of coffee. Just do whatever puts a smile on your face. Be the Maker of Memories for yourself.
I love being a mom and wouldn’t change it for the world, but I’m more than that both personally and professionally. We, as women, are not meant to be one dimensional or to be defined by one role. I want my daughter to make a difference in this world, and I want her to see an example of this kind of person in me. Our impact as moms is meant to be spread far beyond our home. So, just as you schedule out dance recitals, family game nights, or weekend getaways, plan a girls’ night out with your friends once a month. You will thank me for it.
